BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS & ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Doug Kwok, born in Brisbane 1966. Resides in Brisbane. A self taught artist creates hand fabricated metal sculptures and also incorporates found objects to form intricate sculptural artworks of his own unique style ingenuity and technique. He primarily uses precious and semi-precious metals but also uses other non-metallic mediums.

During his childhood, Doug built plastic model planes, cars, motorbikes etc. but soon made his own versions and other creations from different parts with various techniques now known as "Kit Bashing", "Fantasy Modeling" and "Scratch Building" purely because the results were different and could not be bought from the stores. This "tinkering" was the basis for the urge to modify or fully fabricate things, that will continue throughout his life.

Basically anything mechanical or electronic he would try to take apart to see what materials were used and how they were put together. The more complex the more appeal it had. While growing up he found it very interesting watching his friends fathers, who were mostly trades people, do repairs and make things from virtually limited bits and pieces with hand tools. It was like an advanced progression from Lego, Mechano and Fischertechnik toys which he also loved while growing up.

During the 80's Doug studied at Technical College in subjects of Mechanical/Electrical and Electronic Engineering, then in later years worked in the Computer I.T. Industry. During spare time after hours he would make or repair things for friends, and rather than buy presents he would sometimes make one-off items instead. The beginning of his more defined work started to emerge with the Hyper Droids exhibition at Reverse Garbage in West End, Brisbane in 2001. This particular line of artwork was wearable and was also incorporated in many of Brisbane based high performance dance crew, Atomika with multiple live shows in and around Brisbane, including various night clubs, South Bank Piazza, Queensland Museum and Brisbane Power House. In 2008-2009 Doug pursued courses at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in Contemporary Jewellery and Small Objects, Metal Casting and Master Class courses specialising in traditional Hand Hammer Forming metal techniques to refine his sculpturing style. Doug utilises Metal Smithing and Jewellery techniques in some of his sculptures but is also diverse with other industry methodologies including Electric and Gas Fusion Welding and Machining fabrications but currently prefers to create smaller artworks with intricacy and detail.
